Jula!
6.30.09
Working on site redesign. Bear with me. Holy shit, it's been almost a year since I updated, what's up with that? Well, hopefully someone still checks this. More shit to follow! For now, check out this sweet painting I did and my new image viewing interface! SNAP!

The lovely Miss Mosh
8.29.08
This is a work I did for the July '08 Drawing Jam, over at the Drawing Board. Check out the rest of the Jam, here. I did this 100% digitally. Down with analog! I drew it in photoshop, colored in painter, and then finished in photoshop. I'm still getting the hang of drawing on the cintiq but I'm improving... slowly. The model for this was the lovely Mosh, who I found on Deviant Art. Photography credit goes to Christopher Smith.

Another Figure Study
6.11.08
I ran out of time with the model on this one and had to finish it sans model. I'm not sure if it helped or hurt the piece. I had time to be precise and tighten the whole thing up, but at the same time it lacks the spontaneity of life drawing. Still, it was a ton of fun to work on... I just wish I had a little more time with the model.

90 Minute Figure Study
2.7.08
Keeping up the momentum with my new Cintiq, I did another figure study this week! With this one, I wanted to get back to what it was like to do a drawing/painting within a limited time span. Spending a few days working on a painting from a photo, you can just spend as much time as you like on anything. If you get stuck, you can just wait it out. But with a time limit, you have to work through any hangups. This is a 90 minute figure study. It's a bit longer than I used to take in figure study class in college, but it still brought me back. If all goes well, I hope to do a lot more like this. There's nothing that makes you improve faster than quick figure studies. Now if I can just get myself to work on my comic again...

Rihanna... Cintiq!
1.26.08
It's been waaaaay too long since my last update. Sorry about that! I have a few drawings to post that I did over the last year, but I'll start with one I finished today. This is Rihanna, from the latest drawing jam. I recently purchased a new 12" Cintiq monitor from Wacom. It's basically a drawing tablet and monitor rolled into one, where you can draw on the screen. I've wanted one of these for about 10 years (before there was such a thing). I can tell you, it was worth the wait. It feels so natural that when I use the eraser tool, I find myself attempting to wipe away imaginary eraser shavings. So for any artists wondering if it's worth it, I give it three thumbs up!

Six!
2.20.07
This is my first finished work on my new laptop! It only took me 3 months to realize that Painter doesn't ship different versions for the Mac and PC, so my PC version works on my Mac! w00t! I also used Photoshop CS3 beta a little on this. I can't wait for the final version!
Anyway, this is the February '07 Drawing Jam, starring Tricia Helfer aka Six from Battlestar Galactica (the best show on TV)
In other news, I'm ALMOST finished revising my Webcomic, with NEW pages soon to follow! Yes, I'm that slow :)

Cell Colored... Kinda
1.14.07
This is my take on the November Drawing jam. I was going for a cartoony 'cell shaded' look, but ended up half cell shaded and half airbrushed. I need to keep experimenting with new styles!
A few years ago, I made a resolution to draw every single day. I kept it up for about 4 months (until I got a girlfriend). I've 1 upped that resolution this year, by pledging to draw for at least an hour every day. It's only been two weeks, but I've kept up with it... and I'm not going to let anything get in my way this time.

Mangelina
8.13.06
I finally got off my lazy, WoW playing ass and did another drawing jam. There are so many good submissions this month, I just had to pitch in. I'm ALMOST done designing some characters for a friend's website, so I'll have those up when I do. Until then...

It's Lana!
3.23.06
I went snowboarding in colorado a few weeks ago, and ever since I've been a total slacker. Still, I managed to do this today. I think it came out alright, I mean the likeness is there... but it's really not too much different from the photo reference, so I can't be too proud. Still, it's fun to do a study like this with such a unique and beautiful subject. I put up a process slider HERE, and the fantastic Drawing Jam thread is HERE.

Laetitia... Ms. Casta if you're Nasty!
2.21.06
Well, here's the first of my attempts to catch up on old drawing jams. Laetitia Casta is my favorite model, so it only seemed fair that I start with her. I may do another from this jam, but for now I'll leave it at this. I wrestled around with painter for a while before coming to terms with the fact that a lot of crap in the program just doesn't do what it says it does. Even so, I'm happy with how this turned out. Gotta get to work on the next one early, because I'm going snowboarding with my dad in Colorado next week! Go me!

Jam On It
2.21.06
I've kept up regular updates to the Drawing Jam, over at The Drawing Board, even though I really haven't participated in a long time. The latest schedule is a new jam at the beginning of every month. I love hosting the jam, but I've felt a little guilty lately because I haven't been participating. So here's the first in what I hope will be many new jams. Ultimately, I'd like to catch up on all the jams that I've missed over the past year or two. There's simply no excuse not to!
As for this drawing... I tried something slightly different in my choice of brushes. Nearly every great photoshop painter I know uses pen pressure to control opacity. I've always used pen pressure to control flow, giving my work a very soft, airbrushy feel to it. It's something that I've tried to avoid, but I always seem to end up in my comfort zone. On this one, for some reason it just worked... I used pen pressure to control opacity and it felt great! I'm sure most people won't see a difference, but I definitely felt one. This piece has more deliberate and confident brush strokes than my work typically has. It's definitely something I'm going to keep working on in the future.

Evil Spirit Beastly World
10.29.05
Near the end of development on World of Warcraft, a few of the animators (myself included) were asked to help with some of the promotional art for the game. I called dibs on the human female and the undead female, and went to work. Had I known the extent to which they would be using these images, I probably would have spent more time on them. Even so, I'm proud of them, and especially of the fact that they've been used so extensively. I learned a few months ago that they would possibly use them in a chinese coke promotion, but I've waited until now to post about it. HUGE thanks go out to Chip (for mailing me a ton of cans and bottles from China) and Tim for donating his only promotional box. You can find wallpapers on Blizzard's official WoW site here and here. In china, World of Warcraft is translated to "Evil Spirit Beastly World". Oh Engrish... is there anything you can't do?
On an unrelated note, this site hit 100k visits since my last post. Go me!

Pump up the Jam
08.14.05
Although I've been hosting the Drawing Jam over at The Drawing Board for over a year, I've been participating in fewer and fewer jams. That's a trend I'd like to reverse. So here's one from the latest jam. There are some other great posts, I recommend checking them out!

Time flies...
03.04.05
Wow. A lot can happen in 7 months. I finished World of Warcraft, played a whole lot of World of Warcraft (and a few other games), had my computer crash, resurrected my computer, and generally slacked off. I never intended my "temporary hiatus" to last seven months but hey, no excuses. This drawing is to document my plight as I tried to recover as much as I could from my hard drives. Luckily, I had all my important art backed up on a second hard drive. I really just lost all my Mp3s and some email. Could have been worse.
I'm here now and working on page 9 of Blue Abyss and really itching to get back into that. I think I've just about kicked my WoW addiction (yes, even developers get addicted), and I'm very glad to have my life back.
In addition to new pages of Blue Abyss, I'll have some more art to show very soon, including some new Drawing Jams, and even some promo art I did for WoW. Thank you so much to all the people who still come here after 7 months of nothing, and especially to all the people who wrote to encourage, pester, and generally motivate me to return. You guys rock.

About that day job...
08.23.04
Remember what I said about updating every friday? Well, as it turns out, I have this silly little day job and I'm working a bit of overtime latley. Unfortunately, what this means for the comic is that it's physically impossible for me to hold the page a week deadline for now. I had a feeling this might happen, but it's still disappointing. I do hope you'll stick around until this blows over. Thanks for your patience!
Moving went fairly well. I'm all moved out of my apartment, and about 90% moved into my house. It's so nice not to have to deal with up or downstairs neighbors anymore. I might even start DDRing again.
This drawing was actually done over two years ago, and colored this week. I thought it appropriate, considering how sleep deprived I've been lately. Again, I'm sorry for the temporary hiatus. As soon as I'm back to normal hours, expect to see a new page every friday.

It's alive!
07.07.04
I've been developing these characters and stories of mine for years, now. The time has finally come to see this project through. It is with utmost pleasure that I announce my new webcomic, blueAbyss. The first 3 pages are up, and another page will be added every friday. b00ya, grandma! Spread the word!

Now I just drone, drone
04.11.04
Here's the recently completed robotic drone character design from my upcoming web graphic novel. Process here. This character was rather hard for me to design on paper, so I modeled him in 3D to get a better feel for him. I think it helped a ton. This is the last character design (kinda) for the first issue, so I can now get started on actual production! Go me!

Jam Master Adam
02.24.04
It's been a while, but here's a brand new drawing jam. I'm very happy to report that I've been appointed Jam Master for the Drawing Jam! That means I get to choose the reference that the artists draw from, so expect to see lots more of them. This image has also been added to the portfolio section.

New Year, New Hair
02.09.04
This is just a quickie to remind everyone that I'm still alive. Sorry for not updating in forever, but things will be moving forward again very soon. In the meantime, I've updated Pyre's hair slightly. It's less cartoony now, and I think I'll enjoy drawing it a lot more.

Logo Time!
10.19.03
I finally got around to designing a logo for Burn Comics. I think it turned out pretty good, though I'm sure it will change many times along the way. I've watermarked nearly every image on this site with the logo. This is a move to combat image stealing on the net, which has become quite a problem on The Drawing Board lately. Of course, watermarks won't really stop anyone from copying or using one's work, but it will remind them where the original came from.

An angry little monkey
9.7.03
I don't have a name for him just yet, but here's another addition to the team. A monkey with a mysterious past, he's the mechanic of the group. Just don't piss him off. Trust me. Bad news.

What's this? An update?!
6.24.03
That's right, I'm back again with another addition to the character lineup. This is the last one for now. I'll be posting more sketches soon, but now it's time to start production of the comic. There's a lot going on in my life right now, and I'm working hella late hours at work, so please be patient. I'll get there when I get there. :)

Another month, another drawing
4.27.03
Here's another step in the final character designs. Sylphia's natural state is purple, 'cause I can't really think of a mood that purple is. Regarding Pyre's stripes/spots - the people have spoken and they can't make up their damn minds, so I'm stickin' with stripes. Thanks to everyone who sent in their input, it was all very much appreciated. :)

Stripes(?)
4.8.03
This just might be the final character design for Pyre. What do you think? Stripes or spots? So far it's still 50/50 with everyone I've asked.
I recently updated a lot of the script on this site. All the menus and galleries should be working under any browser (thanks, Bolt!).

Back to normal
4.2.03
Here's a new gallery piece. It's Liger Zero, from the series ZOIDS. I don't do a lot of fan art, but Liger Zero is just that cool. Plus, it's been a while since I did a nice technical drawing. No wait, it's not.

Boo!
3.25.03
In keeping with recent trends, I've finished this character study of Boo that I drew at least a year ago. But it's done now! On to bigger and better things!
You may have noticed some updates to different sections lately. The menu has been revamped and now sports some spiffy tool tips. Take a gander. The process section is now complete with 3 process sliders, and more will be added periodically. The personal section is slightly less out of date and I've finally put up a links page. More updates to come. Word.

Bolt
3.15.03
I'm BACK! Snowboarding was a blast, and it's time for regular updates. Here, we (finally) have a new character study of Bolt. This took me waaaaaaaay longer than it should have, simply because I'm an idiot and decided to draw every scratch and piece of rust.

Sketches part 4

Futuristic Archer

Just because it's past midnight in MY time zone, doesn't mean it's still monday SOMEWHERE. Anyhoo, look what we have here! It's the archer of the future. A friend of mine asked me to design an archer character for a flash game he's making, so here's the result. Don't miss the process slider!.
